bunners kensington marketBunner's Bake Shop has opened a new location in Kensington Market that I'm guessing is going to be more popular than the original in the Junction. There's something about Bunner's that seems particularly suited to the neighbourhood. Maybe the veganism or the fact that everything is gluten-free; maybe it's their style (a little Pitchfork twee- hello chalkboard paint and some kind of colourful shredded paper streamer garland).

Most likely, however, it's that until Blackbird Baking Co. (and now Bunner's) entered the picture, the market was lacking in good bread and baked options. (Sorry My Market Bakery I know you are a stalwart but I've never been a fan, and Wanda - you're great for pies, but they're definitely not vegan or gluten-free). Kensington Market has been upping its game for a while now, and the addition of Bunner's is another shining example of enthusiastic entrepreneurship bringing fine product and fresh energy to the streets.

bunners kensington marketThe new Bunner's has most of the Junction crowd favourites - the creamies ($3.25), the cinnamon buns ($4.50), the cupcakes ($3.75, including flavours like vanilla, French toast, strawberry banana, double chocolate and red velvet). No donuts yet - I was told they may make an appearance in the future, potentially just on Saturdays.

bunners kensington marketLuckily, you'll still find the ooey-gooey butter tarts ($3.25) and supersonic brownies ($3.25), and a nice selection of cookies like ginger and chocolate chunk ($2.00) every other day of the week.

bunners bake shop kensington torontoSo far, there's no seating in the bakery - just ample space in front of the counter to hem and haw over your tough decisions. Should it be a carrot gingerbread muffin, or blueberry streusel ($3)?

bunners kensington marketRegular or seeded bread ($7), and while you're thinking savoury, perhaps the family would like mac n' cheese for dinner ($6 for a personal size, $12 for family size)?

bunners kensington marketOn a hot day of wandering through the market, perhaps the loveliest treat from Bunner's is their machine of soft-serve ice cream, serving up a classic vanilla or chocolate or twist cone for only $3. How's that for sweet?
