muddy georgeMuddy George is a specialty menswear shop owned by Altaf Baksh. This is Baksh's first venture into retail after nine years in the corporate world as an HR analyst.

muddy georgeThe aesthetic of the store is casual-contemporary. Baksh works with emerging and established brands from all over the world like Japan, US and Portugal. But most of the clothes and accessories in the store are made in Canada.

muddy georgeExpect to find wool cardigans with patched elbows, twill chinos and leather cuffs from brands like Fred Perry and Levis Made.

muddy georgeThere are also staples like sweaters, wallets and duffel bags from Montreal-based Woolfell ($170) and beaded bracelets from Liel and Lentz ($95).

muddy georgeComfy flannel shirts ($165) are also a big seller. They're soft to the touch and incredibly warm - perfect for those getting ready to settle into winter hibernation mode.

The store does a good job showcasing smaller niche Canadian brands like Outclass, Muttonhead and 18 Waits.

muddy georgeOne on my favourite items currently for sale is an 18 Waits cardigan ($495), impeccably folded and placed in the middle of the store. It's a beautiful piece hand-loomed in PEI.

My eyes also gravitate to the wool trenchcoat from Outclass with intricate detailing in the collar.

muddy georgeIf you're wondering about the name, Muddy refers to Toronto back in the day when it was called Muddy York after a heavy rainfall. George comes from Curious George, a nickname from his mother.
